A Study and Comparison of the Web User Interfaces of "Yahoo", "AltaVista", "Google" and "All the Web" General Search Engines

In this research, after an initial review of general search engines, Yahoo, AltaVista, Google and All the Web were selected for further study. A questionnaire was designed consisting of 4 tables about general information, search features, retrieve and display options and unique features of each search engine. Library research method was then employed and documents, books, and research about search engines were studied in addition to the help pages of the studied search engines. After acquiring adequate knowledge and finding out about the quality and functioning of the user interfaces of each search engine, using comparative survey method and based on the criteria presented in tables, an effort was made to determine the strengths and weaknesses of each search engine. Considering the criteria provided in all the 4 tables, Google received 40 points, AltaVista received 45.5, Yahoo received 40.5 and All the Web received 40.
