Fifteen Years of Science Production of Iran in databases of the "Institute for Scientific Information" (ISI)

During a fifteen-year period from 1993 to 2007, 38554 Iranian scientific productions were indexed in the ISI Web of Science (WoS). Yet the largest numbers of these scientific productions were indexed between 2003 and 2007 (a 276.15 percent increase in comparison to 1998-2002). The variety of "form of documents" and "language" of Iranʹs indexed scientific productions between 1993 and 2007 has always increased. "Chemistry and related sciences", "pharmacy and pharmacology", "polymer sciences", "electrical and electronic engineering", "molecular biology and biochemistry", "mathematics", and "surgery" are among the topical groups which form the largest portion of indexed Iranian scientific productions in WoS. Citation reports of Iranian journals in Journal Citation Report (JCR) in 2006 shows that the number of journals has doubled in comparison to 2005 and has reached 6. Also a study of the 11-year ranking of Iran in Essential Science Indicators (ESI) reveals that, Iran being ranked 40, with respect to the number of indexed scientific productions, is in second place among Islamic countries after Turkey. This is 15 while in previous ten-year periods Iran was ranked 41 and 42 in ESI.
