The Strategies for Searching and Information Retrieval in PubMed and its interfaces

PubMed is a tool for searching and accessing the MEDLINE database. Although searching in this database may seem easy, finding relevant citations could be difficult for users who are not familiar with search methods. This paper firstly discusses the methods for query processing in PubMed and then studies the function of interfaces designed for MEDLINE. The United States National Library of Medicine and some large universities have designed tools that use MEDLINE as their data sources. These interfaces send the usersʹ questions to MEDLINE and find responses in different forms (shapes, charts, abstracts, full texts ...). Studies show that students, and even experts, are frustrated while retrieving specific information from PubMed and other information retrieval systems and the existing tools also do not provide 100% correct answers. These tools are useful to some extent.
