There has always been interaction between myth and art, and they have been accompanied with each other from long years ago. Due to the nature of their timelessness, being space-less and immortal, myths have had a great influence on contemporary arts throughout these recent years, although they look like ancient subjects. This research aims at exploring how myths affect the design of modern works of art. This research primarily concerns with exploring the positions of heroes in different myths, defining their features through library studies, and then examining their roles in various art forms by comparing different heroic myths in the world. Through comparing the, characteristics of mythical heroes with designed features in some artifacts, interesting meaningful interfaces were achieved, indicating the resemblance amongst them. This resemblance was obvious, both in the form and in the content. On one hand the subjects in this research were epic and mythical heroes, and on the other hand, they contained fictional characters of animations, movies, advertisements, computer game stories, and toys inspired by them; their usable objects in virtual and imaginary world were also included. We can also see that the most important characteristics of mythical heroes were in their supernatural powers in battles, their capabilities to change their form and behavior and their ways of fighting, the use of best instruments and their magnificent body. Such characteristics would be also viewed in two dimensional and three dimensional designs in many artistic fields. Characters, which were designed in posters, illustrations, computer games and toys, are mostly
tall and big. They have the best and most advanced swords, shields, headpieces and the fastest roadsters. They wear symbolic clothes; some things which have a lot of symbols and the hairstyles resemble their magnificent power. Another main characteristic is what they wear as decorative symbols on their hand, neck, chest and their clothing to show their magic power and would differentiate them from common people. A general study on art and mythology would show us that they have all these common characteristics. The mythology and art have a bilateral relation: imaginative character of art with super humanity of heroes in mythology work in the same direction, while marvelous characteristics of myths and the shock art brings us with work in the same way as well; expressions of beliefs in myths and communicative action in art have equal functions as well. All the fields of art carry the best material and language to express and remind myths. All the myths have the same characteristics and this reflects a common unconsciousness; that is why they were acclaimed in modern arts. Most of the toys which are made in China and most of computer games and animations which are produced in Japan and America and then exported to all over the world use myths. The users of these artifacts range from children to teenagers across the world. And this is a proof that people in the world carry common unconsciousness, which affects their choice and behavior.
