Those who are involved in evaluation of scientific production have long been interested in journal self-citation (JSC) and author self-citation (ASC) as well as journal impact factor (JIF) as means for the assessment of both researchers and journal quality. The facilities for infometrics studies have been provided by ISI (now Thomson Reuters Scientific) at international level. But at national level there are some endeavors such as China and Japan (Jin, Wang, 1999; Jin, Zhang, Chen, Zhu, 2002; Negishi, Sun, Shigil, 2004). At the beginning of the third millennium Regional Information Center for Science and Technology (RICeST), and the Iranian Ministry of Science, Research and Technology, started to construct the Iran Science Citation Index (ISCI) and the Persian Journal Citation Reports (PJCR) as products of Islamic Science Citation Center (ISC), and released the service from 2004. From then on ISCʹs products play a crucial role in evaluating researchers and their scientific products. Self-citation of a journal as an indicator in bibliometrics studies may affect its impact factor. Accordingly, 956 journals indexed in ISCʹs PJCR investigated in six different disciplines during 2002- 2006. Of total citations (3709), 768 (20.7%) and 1353 (36.5%) belong to ASC and JSC, respectively. This study shows that about 87% of Persian journals in six subject discipline indexed in ISC publish with 57.2% self-citation (either JSC or ASC). 65.6% of journals received 36.5% JSC and 49.7 % received 20.7% ASC. With regard to journal performance the investigation showed that after excluding both ASC and JSC, there were more changes observed in the most journalsʹ rank in different areas. Examination of all JIFs with the JSC in all disciplines during 2002-2006, show a significant correlation between JIF and JSC (r=.565). Correlation between JIF and JSC is investigated for each discipline separately. Among six disciplines there is a significant correlation between JIF and JSC in each subject category except for Engineering. There is a correlation between JIF and ASC (r=.275) but less stronger than JSC. In regard to different disciplines findings show that JIF in Sciences and Engineering is not affected by ASC. Finally, findings show JIF is not influenced by the size of the journal.
