The qualitative and quantitative evaluation of parks and green spaces in city of Tehran (case study)

The significance of urban green spaces -as public domain- in modern urban life patterns and their key role in land use systems, providing city inhabitants with a place for leisure time, decreasing environmental contamination and establishing a closer relationship between people and urban environment is distinguished. This paper deals with the evaluation of parks and green spaces of district 8 in Tehran. The mentioned district suffers from shortage of green spaces and parks, although it owns enough resources and land -in comparison with other districts of city. The outcome of operated appraisal will be of use to urban managers and designers when they allocate and utilize resources. In addition, the study explains how people use the area. This paper is extracted from a survey which was conducted on the basis of theories about urban parks, review of corresponding experiences in Iran and in the world, and general comparison between the main parks in the district 8 and other districts. Different scales were taken into account when carrying out the appraisal study. The results are presented in two parts: quantitative and qualitative; they demonstrate the per capita shortage of green spaces in the district 8; moreover, outcomes demonstrate inappropriate distribution of green spaces and lack of favorable ecological function especially in the second half of the year. Furthermore, the parks do not posses desirable level of security and on account of this the number of people -of different age group using the parks has fallen. Deficit in number and variety of installations and equipment, and substandard play grounds are other negative points in these sites.
