Effects of Amikacin and Gentamicin on Kidney Tubular Function

Background and Objectives: Several studies have investigated the renal toxicity caused by aminoglycoside antibiotics; however the mechanisms of pathogenesis have remained unclear. Current study was undertaken to investigate precisely the effects of Amikacin and Gentamicin on kidney tubular function. Materials and methods: Forty patients, who were suffered from pyelonephritis and hospitalized in Ali Asghar Hospital,Tehran in 2004 were subjected in this study. The patients were divided randomly to 2 equal groups and received intravascularly ampicillin (100mg/kg/24h) plus amikacin(15mg/kg/24h) or ampicillin plus gentamicin (5mg/kg/24h). Amounts of serum and urinary electrolytes and indexes of tubular function such as Ca/Cr < Mg/Cr, TMP/GFR, Ca, Na, Mg and TTKG ratio were measured within 0, 2, 5 and 8 days. Results: Approximately 82.5% and 17.5% of the patients were female and male respectively. No difference was observed in mean serum electrolytes and indexes of tubular function between the tested groups in different days. Conclusion: Therapeutic dose administration of Amikacin and Gentamicin does not have any effects on kidney tubular function.
