Safety Assessment of Probiotics

P robiotics are defined as live cultures of microorganisms that have beneficial effects on consumers. Nowadays, consociate with increase in probiotics use, safety analysis is needed to ensure consumer safety. In first step, molecular identification of these microorganisms is necessary. In-vitro and in-vivo expriments are needed to improve the probiotic properties of a microorganism including its virulence and infecting capacity, possession of antibiotics resistance genes and possibility of horizontal transfer to intestinal indigenous microflora. Also, assessments of toxin productions and metabolic function of probiotic microorganisms are necessary. By the way, beside safety assessment of a probiotic, host intimacy should be considered. Some microorganisms are opportunistic pathogens and infected Immunocompromised person. So, Immunocompromised animal model must be used to approve safety of these microorganisms.
