Effective Traits for Indirect Selection of Bread Wheat Genotypes in Warm and Dry Conditions

Due to complexity of grain yield and its interaction with less effective characters and environmental factors, production improvement through merely empirical selection is difficult. If some morphological or physiological traits can be identified that have correlation with grain yield and can be used as secondary traits. They will increase selection efficincy in segregation populations or in undesirable evaluation conditions. Twenty bread wheat genotypes planted in randomized complete block design with four replications at Gachsaran Agricultural Research Station in two years (2004-05).Twenty one morphophysiologic characters evaluated. For identification of the most important characters and their direct and indirect effects on grain yield, genetic correlations, stepwise regression and path analysis were done. Obtained results showed that early growth vigor, days to heading and pubscence of leaves and stem can be used as secondary traits. Grain legnth and threshing ability were important, too.
