histomorphometric study on pancreatic islets in turkey in comparison with goose and duck

The islets of Langerhans, discovered by a medical student 140 years ago, occupy a pivotal position in the endocrine control of fuel metabolism. The present study was designed to determine the number and diameters of pancreatic islets in turkey and its comparison with goose and duck. This study was conducted on 6 pairs of geese of both sexes, age ranging from 26-30 weeks. Immediately following euthanasiation of animal, the whole pancreas was collected. After fixation in 10% buffered formalin solution, the pancreas segments were embedded in paraffin and the sections were stained with H&E and Gomori for pancreatic islet cells. Morphometric studies on these sections were carried out using ocular micrometer and light microscope. The islet diameters in turkey, duck and goose were found between 94.96 to 154.84, 65.7 to 115.2 and 74.2 to 129.7 microns respectively. These results shows the maximum islet diameter was observed in the turkey pancreas and the minimum diameter was observed in the duck pancreas. The maximum number of islets was noticed in the male pancreas but the maximum diameter was observed in the female pancreas. The results suggested that the number and diameters of pancreatic islets in turkey, duck and goose were varied in the different parts of gland and also in different sexes with an inversion relation.
