Depositional environments and sequence stratigraphy of the Ruteh Formation in Zal and Pir-Esagh area (south of the Julfa)

Outcrops of the Ruteh Formation (Upper Permian) have been studied in Zal and Pir-Esagh area to determine their facies, sedimentary enviroments and their sequences. The Ruteh Formation (926 meters thick) consists of dark gray limestones contuining 12 microfacies. These facies were deposited in open marine, barrier, lagoon and tidal flat environments related to a ramp platform. Sequence stratigraphyic analysis revealed five depositional sequence in this formation. These sequences with both type 1 and 2 sequence boundaries are recognized in carbonat deposits. The Upper Permian (Murgabian) sequences in the study area are correlated global sea - level curve.
