Effect of Sea Water on Compatibilizer Performance in Water Absorption Behavior of Wood Flour-Polypropylene Composites

In this study, the effect of sea water of Persian Gulf and Caspian Sea on performance of maleic anhydride compatibilizer in long term water absorption behavior of wood flour-polypropylene composites was investigated. The composite samples (50% fiber loading) were made using a laboratory counter-rotating twin-screw extruder without presence of MAPP and 2% MAPP. The water samples of Persian Gulf and Caspian Sea were prepared from Noor and Bandar Abbas coasts, respectively, and analyzed in laboratory. The composites were immersed in various waters for several weeks and long term water absorption and thickness swelling were measured. The results showed that the addition of two percent MAPP has not significant effect on water absorption of composites immersed in Caspian Sea and Persian Gulf water whereas considerable effect was observed in decrease of water absorption behavior of composites immersed in distilled water.
