The relationship of increased intra ocular pressure and myopia

Refractory errors especially myopia is a common ophthalmik disease. Myopia maybe accompanied with intra ocular hypertesion that may lead to ophthalmic nerve damage and visual field loss. So we have studied intraocular pressure in myopia cases.We evaluated intraocular pressure in 100 myopia cases who came to ophthalmology departments of Azad univesity. All cases who had another eye disease which may cause oplic nerve damage or visual loss or visual field defects besides myopia, were excluded. Visual acuity was measured and myopia was confirmed and then IOP was measured by Schiotz tonometry.Among 100 patientse, female and male frequencies were almost similar and mean age was 40.32 years and myopia was more common in juvenile in third decade of life. Mean refraction of right eye was -2.45D and -1.95° for left eye.Mean intraocular pressure was 13.75 in right eye and 14.28 in left eye. In fondoscopy we detected normal sizes and sharp disk in half of cases. Cup was pale in more than half of the patients.There was a positive correlation between intraocular pressure and severity of myopia and higher intraocular pressure was detected in more sever myopia cases. Comparing mean intraocular pressure in different age groups showed higher IOP in fifth and eighth decades of life. Comparing mean intraocular pressure in different range of myopia showed higher IOP in patients with moderate myopia (-3 to -4 D).IOP may increased to some extent in sever myopia cases so we suggest routine and regular control of IOP in myopia to reduce itʹs complications.
