Comparison the effects of Levodopa and selegiline in Parkinson disease

Selegiline is on of new therapeutic agents in parkinson disease which inhibit Dopamin metabolism by selective irreversible inhibition of monoamin oxidaze B enzyme.There are some data which indicate selegeline can suppress progression of disese ,and it pre¬scribe in earlier phase of disease.In this study we compared therapeutic effects of selegi¬line with Levodopa in different stages of parkinson disease.We studied 50 parkinson disease cases in a prospective study at different stages of disese in 17-shahrivar hospital during 17 months. These patients were devided into two groups which were threated either by selegiline 5 mg/BID or Levodopa 250-750 mg/day to compare therapeutic effects between these groups. All of cases were evaluated by UP- DRS scaling methods at the first and one month lather.Therapeutic effects of selegiline and Levodopa were almost the same in earlier stages of parkinson disease. But in progressive stage, Levodopa was more effective significantly.Selegiline is a good alternative for Levodopa in primary stages (I, II) of parkinson dis¬ease specially for rigidity ,bradykinesia and tremor but in advanced stages (III) we rec¬ommended levodopa yet.
