Evaluation of Positive Blood Culture in Neonatal ICU Patients

Neonatal sepsis is a common problem among the newborns in NICU that may lead to several complications, even to death. So, early diagnosis and proper management are needed. In this study we have evaluated the results of blood culture and antibiograms in septicemic Cases.Newborns with positive blood culture in the NICU of Bahman 22nd Hospital undertook some studies for their antibiograms and were also evaluated for different organism sensitivity to antibacterial agents.Among 45cases, 18 patients were females, 27 males. The results of WBC-count turned out to be in normal range for 88.7ʹ/. of the cases. More than half of the patients had normal birth weight. 57.8 /. of them were termed while the other 42.2ʹ/. were pretermed. The rate of mortality was 13.3ʹ/..The most common pathogens in neonatal spesis were: E coli (24.4/.), klebsiela pneumonia (24.4/.), coagulase positive staphilococus (COPS) (24.4/.) and coagulase negative staphilococus (CONS) (17.8/.). Organisms were different according to the newbornsʹ age, birth weight and their gestational age at labour. E coli was more common in early septicemia while CONS was determines as the most common in late septicemia. E coli, Pseudomona Aerogenousa and Neiceria Meningitidis were sensitive most to Ceftizoxim and Cefotaxim whereas Kiebsiela Pneumonia was sensitive to Tubramicin and Cotrimoxazole. COPS was sensitive to Cefotaxim, Amikacin and Tubramicin, CONS to Gentamicin and Amikacin.Early diagnosis and treatment is the main rule in neonatal sepsis and pathogens. Effective antibacterial agents vary according to the factors of age and others.
