Evaluating the Efficacy of Transurethral Lithotripsy for Lower Urethral Stone Treatment

Urinary calculi is the third most common disease of urinary tract, exceeded only by urinary tract infection and pathologic conditions of the prostate. As most upper urinary stones remain in distal ureter, which can cause severe pain and kidney destruction, a method of higher efficacy and lower rate of complication is needed to treat the site.66 patient with distal ureter stone (47males and 19 females) who referred to Bahman 22nd and Aria hospitals in the year 1384 (2005) participated in this study. They were all under TUL operation with Lithoclast. The efficacy of TUL in removing the stone as well as the complications of the surgery were evaluated, especially in 15 and 30 days after the operation.In this study about 70"/. of the patients were males and around 29ʹ/. females. 98ʹ/. of the patients were older than 12 years old. The mean size of the stones was measured as 9.5 mm. The most common type of calculi was found to be calcium oxalate. TUL proved to be successful in the treatment of urethral calculi with a rate of 80ʹ/. while in 12ʹ/. of cases, a residual stone was noticed after one month.Based on the results, TUL is a safe and effective method in the treatment of distal ureter stones.
