At the beginning of the new millennium, world is witnessing the expansion of urbanism and growth in the number of cities. The rapid growth of urbanism in the developing countries is exponential; so that a new form of cities called metropolises have emerged. The genesis of metropolises in the above-mentioned countries has been associated with the rise of various urban problems such as increase in the number of people living in suburb, social crimes growth, economic and social gap growth, poverty expansion, urban community bipolarity, social abnormalitiesʹ growth and ultimately urban disorder and social security rate reduction. The present paper argues that, insecurity level in metropolises can be reduced through developing regional gatherings.
These gatherings are small organic units which have identity and their inhabitants cooperate with each other in identifying their requirements and solving problems; and they have similar customs and traditions.
The research method used for examination of the role of neighborhood development and the role of regional gatherings for enhancing social security is the analytical-developmental method. So, first of all the concepts of neighborhood and regional gatherings have been described. Then, after having a glance at the status of Iranʹs metropolises, it has been dealt with the grounds and factors which affect crime occurrence and insecurity. Finally, it has come to wrap up and conclusion.
The findings of the research are the result of the examination of urbanism trend, especially in metropolises, grounds for crime occurrence, and factors effective in either reducing or enhancing security rate in cities. After considering the above-mentioned issues, it came out that massiveness and massive growth of cities are among the most important reasons of crime generation and reduction of security level in cities. Therefore, the suggestion is that development of regional gatherings is
the most proper and practical option for promoting security in metrop- olises. These gatherings, while interacting with the metropolis, maintain
their own independence and integration; its inhabitants meet face to face; and prevent strangers from entering their neighborhood.
