Antibacterial Activity Evaluation of Plantago major extracts

Plantago major L. is known for its antibacterial, antiflammatory, the treatment of wounds, fevers and dermal diseases. The aim of this study was to investigate the antibacterial activity of aqueous and infusion extracts of the aerial parts (leaves, roots, stems) P. major against on pathogenic bacteria. P. major were collected from North of Iran (Ziarat village).Its extracts obtained by perculation method. Antibacterial effects were assessed by Disc diffution method .The results showed that the aqueous axtract had better antibacterial effect than infusion extract and gram negative bacteria are resistant toward different extracts. S. aereus, S. epidermidis and Micrococcus are the most sensitive bacteria while the maximum inhibition zone was 13 to 18.2 mm. The results might confirmed the ethnobotanical use of the studied species for the treatment of various diseases.
