The Effect of Weldʹs Geometry in Fracture of Welded Flange Plate Connection

Failure of the CJP groove weld at the top and bottom plates in welded flange plate (WFP) connection is the main cause of the observed damages in these connections. Sometimes, the preparations of the plates are not performed properly in construction. Moreover, when the inspection is done and the flaws are observed, instead of grinding the welds, they are strengthened by fillet weld. In some cases, the fillet weld is used. In this paper, by the means of static and dynamic tests on specimens of top and bottom plates, those result are achieved: only groove weld with complete penetration had strength of plate (mother materials), and if weld does not have perfectly penetration at root, itʹs strength will decrease. Single fillet weld are not accepted in test, but double fillet weld and groove weld with low angle at ledge plate have satisfactory result.
