Egyptian Ikhvan al-Muslimin: From Fundamentalism to Democratic Participation

The problem of Islamic movements has received attention again especially after Iranian Islamic Revolution. Existing researches mainly sought to find the answer why such movements take shape, and then tried to employ pathologic and sociological view. Egyptian Ikhvan al-Muslimin (Muslim Brotherhood) is one of the first leading Islamic Movements, and then has had important role in generating subsequent Islamic trends. In this article we want to study the intellectual and practical course of Ikhvan, analyzing its roots. The main questions are so: Is Ikhvan al-Muslimin according to its ideology a fundamental movement? What transformations it has experienced in different stages? As a hypothesis we can say that although Ikhvan in middle period of its history, according to special historico-political reasons of the time, tended to semi-radical fundamentalism, after the change of historical conditions inclined to political process and parliamentaristic methods.
