Transformations of Iranian Foreign Policy Trends

Iranian foreign policy like other political unites implies signs of continuity and discontinuity. Directions of foreign policies bears more limited changes than Stateʹs public behaviors and national role. If political regime faces a revolutionary change, naturally the strategy and directions of foreign policy would have change, and when transformations of foreign policy have intra-structural nature, only the national role in political processes and foreign policy will change. Iranian foreign policy has been based on "no-West—no-East" slogan and a kind of revisionism in current international system. Then we can say that Iranian approach to international system is based on ideological standards. In this context, Iranian conceptual model has been formulated in the frame of notions like dʹar-al islam and dʹar-al kufr. Any State out of values of the dominant ideology will be faced with restrictive reactions of Iranian rulers, and the States with convergent ideologies will be protected by Iran. Structuralist theories of international relation could be applied to study these transformations. Structuralism refers to the various connections between foreign policy and elements like structure of International system and internal structure of political unites. Then, signs of continuity and discontinuity in Iranian foreign policy could be studied in early years of Islamic Revolution, years of imposed War, and emergence of processes of detension, trust-making, and conflictualism. In this journey, Iranian foreign policy at first experiences revisionism, and then takes a conformist program as its agenda, and finally tends to a kind of anti-hegemonic discourse. The claim here is that these transformations have been under the influence of international structure, internal milieu of Iran, and foreign policy processes.
