The Effect of Synthetic Dressings on the Healing Process of Pediatrics Burn Wounds

Background & Objectives: The process of wound healing is complex and wound dressing is an integral part of it. Wound dressings are divided into traditional and modern types. There are several types of new wound dressings available contributing to the healing process. It is supposed that the modern dressings including synthetic dressing accelerate burn wound healing. The purpose of the present study was to compare the effect of synthetic and traditional dressings on the healing process of pediatrics burn wound. Materials & Methods: A semi experimental study was conducted on 61 children with second- and third-degree burns admitted in the pediatric burn ward at the Burn Center of Sina Hospital, Tabriz (2008). 31 patients underwent synthetic dressing and the rest of the patients (30) underwent traditional dressing. Results: In the experimental group received synthetic dressings the mean scores were 2.48±0.62 days for granulation, 3.38±1.14 days for reepithelialization and 6.70±2.17 days for hospitalization period. Thus in control group mean scores were, respectively, 4.13±1.16, 6.18±1.81 and 10.90 ± 4.34. The statistical tests of Mann-Whitney showed significant difference between three branches of the two groups. (p<0.001) Conclusion: This study indicates that the application of synthetic dressings promote wound care of pediatric burn patients. Therefore, much more researches related to wound dressings should be conducted by a range of nurses; strong clinical evidences will be achieved on the existence of these kinds of works.
