Iodine Catalyzed One-Pot Synthesis of 3,4-Dihydropirimidin-2-(1H)-ones and Thiones under Mild Conditions

An efficient method for synthesis of 3,4-dihydropyrimidin-2(lH)-ones andthiones (DHPMs) from aldehyde, p-ketoester and urea or thiourea using acatalytic amount of iodine is described. Compared with the classical Biginellireaction conditions, this new method has the advantage of excellent yields (70-95%)and short reaction time (3-7 hours) in the absence of organic solvent under mildconditions.
