Evaluation of Quantitative and Qualitative Characters of Some Advanced Potato Clones and Cultivators in Ardabil

This research was initiated in a randomized complete block design with 3 replications to evaluate 12 advanced clones and cultivars of potato at Agricultural and Natural Resources Experiment Station of Ardabil for two years (2005 and 2006). The genotypes under study consisted of 5 clones of true potato seed (TPS) progenies produced in 2000, six cultivars (Satina, Sante, Ceaser, Almera, Atlas and Banba) produced during 2000-2003, and Agria, as control. Character measured during growth period were: main stem number per plant, plant height, number and weight of tubers per plant and number and size of tubers smaller than 35 mm., 35-55 mm, and larger than 55mm. in diameter; and trait measure after harvest included total tuber yield. Marketable tuber yield, dry matter percent, French fries and chips color and weight of tubers after storage. Combined ANOVA showed significant differences among genotypes for total and marketable tuber yield, plant height, number of main stem and tuber weight per plant, number and weight of tuber sizes smaller than 35 mm., 35-5 mm, and larger than 55mm. Mean comparisons showed that Sante, Almera, Banba and ATZIMBAxTPS-67-8 clones produced highest total and marketable tuber yields, tuber weight per plant, and number and weight of tubers 35-55 mm in diameter. Sante, on the other hand, produced highest total and marketable tuber yield, dry matter percent, storage tuber weight, chips and French fries in yellow color, round tubers with shallow eye depth. Tuber weight loss in storage for Ceaser, Almera and Banba was lower than Agria, as control. Total tuber yield showed a positive and significant correlation with marketable tuber yield, weight of tubers per plant and number and weight of tuber with 35-55 mm. diameters.
