Determination of Optimal Cropping Pattern and Calculation of Economic Value of Scarce Inputs in Damghan: Application of Linear Programming Technique

Determination of optimal cropping pattern and calculation of the shadow price of scarce inputs are the usual approaches for the optimal usage of resources and overcoming the relative shortage of resources. In this study optimal cropping pattern of Damghan region, in Iran, was determined and the shadow prices of scarce inputs were calculated. Results revealed that irrigated barley, safflower, melon and watermelon were optimal enterprises of this region according to the existing limitations of the region. On the other hand, the shadow prices of scarce inputs, including water, capital and labour, in the spring cropping, were 617, 135 and 92950 rials respectively. The shadow price of water was equal to 673 rials in the fall cropping for the cropping year of 2005-2006. Moreover, the normative supply functions of optimal crops and the normative demand functions of scarce inputs were also calculated.
