Evaluation of Sugar beet Genotypes Responses to Water Stress Under Field Condition

In order to screen sugar beet genotypes for drought tolerance an experiment was conducted at the Agricultural and Natural Resources Research Center of Khorasan in 2007. This research consisted of 49 genotypes (44 hybrids, 5 controls) and they were laid out in a square lattice design (7><7) with three replications. Analysis of variance showed significant differences among genotypes for white sugar yield , sugar yield ,white sugar content, sugar content, sugar content of molasses ,alkalinity coefficient (p<%l), root yield, nitrogen and purity (p<%5). Comparison of means showed that the control genotypes produced highest white sugar yield. Simple correlation values also revealed that correlation between white sugar yield with traits like sugar yield, white sugar content, sugar content and root yield under drought stress conditions were positive and significant. This indicates that these traits in white sugar yield can be used as selection criteria for desired genotypes.
