Effect of plant density on yield and yield components of winter wheat (T.aestivum) cultivars

In order to determine the optimum plant density per unit area for obtaining high yield per hectare, a split plot experiment based on RCB with three replication was conducted in Agricultural Research Center of Tabriz during 1994/95 cropping season. In this experiment, wheat cultivars (Alamoot, Alvand, and MV-17) and four seed density (400,450,500 and 550 seeds per meter square) were allocated to main plots and sub plots, respectively. Significant difference among the genotypes were observed for most of the traits especially grain yield. Plant densities significantly affected fertile tillers per plant, grain yield per plant, grain yield per tiller, plant height and grain yield per unit area. So that with increasing plant density per unit area , grain yield per hectare was increased. However, yield differences of 450,500 and 550 plant per m2 were not significant.
