In order to evaluate the effects of foliar application of microelements at different stages of growth on seed yield and yield components of sunflower a factorial experiment based on randomized complete block design with three replications was conducted during growing season at the Research Station of Faculty of Agriculture, Islamic Azad University of Tabriz, Iran. Treatments were micronutrients (a0, control; a1,ZnSO4; a2, MnSO4; a3, FeSO4 and a4, H3BO3) and times of foliar applications (b1, at 6-8 leaf stage; b2, at 12-14 leaf stage; b3, at bud stage; b4, at both 6-8 and 12-14 leaf stages). Traits measured were leaf area (at the end of vegetative growth stage), head diameter, hundred kernel weight, hundred seed pith weight, biomass, seed yield and harvest index. Results showed that head diameter, hundred kernel weight, hundred seed pith weight, biomass, seed yield and harvest index and seed yield were increased by foliar application of sunflower with magnesium sulphate. The differences between hundred kernel weight and hundred seed pith weight by using magnesium sulphate with those of control were 2.44 and 27.53 grams, respectively. Yield increase, due to MnSO4 application was calculated to be 2070 kg/ha more than control. Micronutrients applied to the leaves all increased harvest index. Microelements applied, except iron sulphate, reduced percentage of empty seeds. Hundred kernel weight and percentage of empty seed under foliar application were statistically different from those of control. Application of microelements at 12-14 leaf stage increased hundred kernel weight, hundred seed weight pith and seed yield by about 38.55, 54.1 and 48.01 percent respectively as compared with those of control. Foliar application of microelements at 12-14 leaf stage increased harvest index. In summary, it can be concluded that foliar application of sunflower with MnSO4 at 12-14 leaf stage increase kernel and seed pith weights and seed yield.
