The Role of Information Technology in Achieving Organizationsʹ Strategic Goals

The role of information technology in achieving strategic development goals of an organization has been always discussed. In this paper, the experiences of Petro trying to achieve Iran Development Company, a subsidiary of Iran National petroleum Company, trying to achieve strategic development goals of the company and also reaching long term goals of Iran Islamic government through information technology development are described. In the beginning of the project, it is tried to prep pare a flexible and timed plan, the company used lower to upper method of decision making in which potential users to participate in the process of doing the job and they were consulted. The support of executive management for transforming to new system was vital and was concerned from the beginning. Although there was not a unique and tested solution for supporting the organization need, but the recognition capability of related software and their integration through the company 9s internal network development and optimization( intranet) and internal data base were existed. Now the control of divisions is easier and all divisions have access to information excellently. The project timing is more accurate, so the management is able to formulate long term strategies, this renovation and developments has promoted the competitive capability of the company.
