The effect of sodium benzoate (C6H5COONa) on testosterone and thyroid hormones in adult male mice

In this study the effect of sodium benzoate was investigated on testosterone and thyroid hormones in adult male mice. Sodium benzoate is an antibacterial agent and is used in food stuffs. Eighteen adult male mice ( BALB/c) were divided in 3 groups of 6 animals. Two groups of animals were treated with either 140 or 280 mg/kg/day of sodium benzoate for 60 days (Group I and II Experimental respectively). Animals of control group were administrated the water without sodium benzoate for 60 days. Then the blood samples were collected from the left ventricle after anesthesis with diethylether. Testosterone levels of plasma were decreased in group I and II experimentals mice significantly (P<0.000l). FSH and LH levels of plasma were decreased in group II experimental compared with controls significantly (P<0.000l). T3 and T4 hormons were decreased in group II experimental compared with control group (P<0.001) and TSH hormone was increased in group II in comparison with control group (P<0.001). The results indicate that sodium benzoate decreases the testosterone, FSH, LH, T3 and T4 hormones which are very important in basal metabolism.
