A comparative study was performed between the honey from 5 different regions of Iran and five common antibiotic in treatment of intestinal infections with Salmonella typhimurium origin, Cephotacim, Choleramphenicol, Jentamicin, Ampicillin, trimetoprim, in order to survey the antimicrobial effects of honey. The qualitative and quantitative tests of the honey were carried out according to standard number 92 of Iran. The antimicrobial tests were performed by agar well diffusion, surface culture and agar and broth dilution methods. The diameter of insufficient area was 12.33 ± 1.71 in Mahneshanʹs honey, 12.10 ± 0.75 in Ardabilʹs honey, 8.87 ± 0.95 in Taromʹs honey, 8.75 ± 1.06 in Zanjanʹs honey and 8.19 ± 0.93 in Northʹs honey. Mahneshanʹs and Ardabilʹs honey showed efficient antimicrobial effect in comparison to the antibiotics and excess antimicrobial activity in comparison to trimetoprim and ampicillin. It seems the origin and variety of the plants have some effects on antimicrobial activity of the honey. Since that the Mahneshanʹs and Ardabilʹs honey achieved from mountainous areas and from various plants were more efficient in antimicrobial effects.
