A Critical Analysis of Ibn Taymiyyahʹʹs Views about the Caliphsʹʹ Commandership of Expeditions

ابن‌تيميه كه آرا و آثار او پشتوانه اصلي وهابيت است، در گزاره اي مدعي شده است كه دو خليفه نخست، در سريه هاي متعددي سمت فرماندهي داشته اند و اميرالمومنين علي? جز در يك مورد، هيچگاه چنين نقشي را عهده دار نبوده است. البته واكاوي منابع اهل سنت نشان مي دهد كه تمام سريه‌هاي منسوب به ابوبكر، نام‌هاي مختلف براي تنها يك سريه است، علاوه بر اينكه فرماندهي او در اين سريه نيز مورد ترديد و انكار پژوهشگران قرار گرفته است. همچنين تنها سريه عمر نيز در بردارنده تضادها و همراه با پرسش‌هاي گوناگوني است كه تاكنون بدون پاسخ مانده است. منابع اهل سنت هيچ سريه‌اي را به عثمان نسبت نداده‌اند، در حالي كه همين منابع، فرماندهي سراياي متعددي را براي اميرالمومنين علي? ثبت كرده‌اند. بنابراين، مدعاي ابن‌تيميه در تعارض آشكار با منابع اهل سنت است و هيچ پشتوانه تاريخي ندارد. گزارش واكاوي منابع اهل سنت براي سنجش مدعاي ابن‌تيميه در اين نوشتار آمده است.

Ibn Taymiyyah, whose views and works are considered as the basic source of Wahhabism, claims that the first two Caliphs were appointed as commanders of several expeditions but Imam Ali (the Commander of the Faithful–A.S) commanded only one expedition. Of course, a study of the Sunni resources proves that the expeditions attributed to the first caliph, Abu Bakr, are in fact different names for a single expedition. Furthermore, the researchers have doubts about his commandership of that expedition and so they reject this claim. As for the idea of only expedition led by the second Caliph, ʹOmar, it is open to dispute and the questions about this idea remained unanswered. Sunni resources attribute the commandership of no expedition to the third caliph, ʹOthman, while they have recorded many expeditions led by Imam Ali. Therefore, Ibn Taymiyyahʹs claim clearly contradicts the Sunni resources and has no historical grounds. The present paper provides an overview of the Sunni resources and then evaluates the Ibn Taymiyyahʹs claim.
