PROMOTION ON SCIENCE PRODUCTION IN SOUTH KOREA

In recent years, South Korea has steadily increased its share of the worldʹs scientific literature according to papers indexed in the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI). Overall, South Korea has increased its share of the [SI database from 0.05% in 1981 to 1.7% in 2000, and then to 2.1% in 2003; i.e. a 42-fold increase in just 23 years. This promotion has been accompanied by a rise in the number of highly cited papers produced by South Korean institutions, as well as an upward trend in the nationʹs citation impact in key fields. Currently, South Korea is the 14th science producing country in the world. The nationʹs greatest role in science production is in Physics and particularly in the materials science with more than 5% in 2002. Research in materials science is also the field in which South Koreaʹs citations-per-paper compares best with the world average.
