Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS)

China is a vast country, forty times of Britain, with different racial minorities such as Mongolians, Tibetans, etc. Chinese are famed for their technological skills. Centuries before Europeans, they achieved major advances in certain technologies such as print industry, application of moving water energy and acupuncture. However, the progress of science and technology has faced great changes in recent decades, especially after the victory of the Chinese revolution when the Communist government established many scientific institutions. The Chinese Academy of Sciences was founded on November 1st, 1949 on the basis of the former Central Academy of Sciences, Beijing academy of Sciences and Yanʹan academy of Natural Sciences. It is the countryʹs highest academic institution and comprehensive research center in natural sciences. Under CAS, there are five Academic Divisions, 108 scientific research institutes to conduct research and train human resources, over 200 science and technology enterprises, and more than 20 supporting units including one university, one graduate school and five documentation and information centers. They are distributed over various parts of the country. Twelve branches of CAS were established in Shanghai, Nanjing, Hefei, Changchun, Shenyang, Wuhan, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Kunming, Xiʹan, Lanzhou and Xinjiang. Research institutions also aim to adjust needs of society with modern science. CAS has a total staff of over 58,000, of whom 39,000 are scientific personnel according to 2000 figures. CAS has made great contributions to the country in hi-tech research and development. For instance, it developed the first electronic computer, the first vector computer and the first parallel computer system, as well as the first laser devices and first space remote-sensing equipment in the country.
