NATIONAL INSTITUTES OF HEALTH (NIH)

For over a century, the National Institutes of Health has played an important role in improving the health standards of the American nation. Many important health and medical discoveries of the last century resulted from research studies supported by the National Institutes of Health. NIH support many scientists in the USA and even in other countries. Besides, they direct and monitor medical findings contributing to the human health and its maintenance. NIH scientists investigate ways to prevent diseases, to pinpoint their causes, and to find treatment and cure for common and even rare diseases. As a Federal agency, the NIH considers many different perspectives and criteria in establishing research priorities. A very competitive peer-review system identifies and funds the most promising and high-quality research studies to address these priorities. In every state across the country, the NIH supports research at hospitals, universities and medical schools. The NIH trains the current and next generation of researchers to ensure that the access to advance medical science remains strong. Its own scientists, and those supported by the NIH grants and contracts, have been responsible for countless medical advancements. More than 100 of these distinguished scientists have received Noble Prizes in recognition of their work.
