Numerical Simulation of Hydraulic Fracturing and Investigation of Frac properties in Various Condition of Insitu Stress

Hydraulic fracturing is a widely used method for enhancing oil extraction in the petroleum industry. Because of complications associated with this process, it is beneficial to use numerical methods in the design of fracturing process. This research describes the results of numerical simulation of hydraulic fracturing process in an oil-well carried out using the UDEC (Universal Distinct Element) code. Simulations were performed for various boundary conditions with considering a transient flow algorithm for fluid flow. Numerical simulation with UDEC showed that the fracture is initiated and propagated in the direction perpendicular to the minimum principal stress. In addition, it showed that if the difference between the minimum and maximum principal stresses is increased, the hydraulic properties of the fracture will be improved.
