An investigation of the trade of African male and female slaves in the Qajar Era

Through the changes which happened in the Qajar Era and c? _>ed changes in the geographic borders - the Iranian domination over Caucasia was finished by the Russians - these changes stopped the entrance of white male and female slaves to Iran. Instead of these white slaves, a great number of male and female black slaves who mostly were from Ethiopia and Zanzibar entered the country. These slaves entered the coasts and harbors of the Persian Gulf and from there were carried to all parts of Iran. These slaves had come from the east and the North East of Africa. Before this time, the number of the black male and female slaves was very scarce and the slaves were not seen in public. They worked in the houses and lands of the rich. This trade continued inspite of the prohibition of slave trade and the severe control which the British navy exerted over the slave trafficking ships and it lasted until the beginning of the 20th century. This study attempts to investigate the trade and trafficking of the male and female Africans slaves in the Qajar Period.
