Comparison of Ionizing Rays Effects on Nutritive Value of Cottonseed Meal

This study was conducted to determine and compare effects of ionizing rays (gamma and electron) on nutritive value of cottonseed meal. Samples were exposed to gamma ray and electron beam at doses of 0, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 kGy. Chemical compositions were determined according to AOAC methods and true protein was determined as recommended standard procedure of Bradford. Changes in protein subunit pattern were monitored using SDS-PAGE analysis. Gossypol content measured according to ISO procedure using spectrophotometer at 435 nm. Digestibility of nutrients was determined according to force feeding method using adult cocks. Data were analyzed in a completely randomized design using GLM procedure of SAS package. Irradiations had no effect (P>0.05) on chemical composition. Also, there were no changes in protein subunits pattern of untreated and irradiated cottonseed meal. Irradiations decrease (P<0.05) gossypol content of cottonseed meal. There were differences (P<0.05) between gamma and electron on decreasing gossypol content. Decreasing order of gossypol content of gamma irradiation at doses of 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 kGy were 13. 17, 22, 24, 25 % and for electron irradiation were 9, 15, 15, 21, 34 %, respectively. Digestibility of studied parameters increase (P<0.05) by irradiation at dose of 15 kGy on ward. Based upon the results of this study, effects of gamma and electron irradiation on chemical composition and digestibility are the same, except for gossypol.
