Counterfactuals and Mental Spaces Theory in Viewpoint of Cognitive Linguistics

This paper describes "Counterfactuals" concept in viewpoint of Cognitive Linguistics within the framework of "Mental Spaces" theory. This study is an attempt to show the situation of dealing with the so-called "Mental Spaces" theory introduced by Fauconnier, a main character of Cognitive Linguistics, in discussing the semantic phenomena such as "Counterfactuals", "Presupposition", and "Transparency and Opacity of Referring" which has already been discussed in linguistic semantics and logical semantics. Therefore, the main goal of this paper is to show that what Fauconnier mentioned about the "Mental Spaces" must be seen in a continuum of facts, according to linguistic data.
