Review of Clothing and Appearance of Students of Islamic Azad University, Northern Tehran Branch

This study intends to review the clothing and appearance of students of Islamic Azad University, north Tehran unit. The method of survey was based on cross-sectional research and used the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software for analyzing information. The sample size included 440 people based on Cochran formula and members were selected from different departments on the basis of a systematic random sampling. After examining the validity of questionnaires, those which had fundamental problems were eliminated and the number of questions was reduced to 380. In the analysis of information, in addition to the distribution of the parameters of the study, statistical techniques such as mean and median average, deviation from the mean and Chi-square test were used. Results of the research are examined in two categories: descriptive and explanatory. In the descriptive category, despite some problems and shortfalls, it was clarified that on the whole, the attire and appearance of students are good and relatively acceptable from the viewpoint of respondents. (This is available in the summary and conclusion of this study). In the explanatory category, of the nine postulates, seven postulates are verified. It is clarified that there exists a meaningful relationship among age, gender, field of study, religious belief, the level of awareness of students about religious restrictions on clothing, lifestyle and the extent of abidance of parents and studentsʹ friends by fashion and their approach vis-a-vis clothing and appearance. Two postulates concerning the impact of the mass media and the extent of studentsʹ adherence to fashionable trends are not validated. This is while results contradict the literature, research precedence and theoretical framework, which are founded on performance-orientation, social learning, exchange of viewpoints and socially acceptable norms. These parameters are scrutinized and analyzed. In the end, the evaluation of data revealed that a significant percentage of students do not favor an obligatory dress code and too many restrictions on clothing and appearance. Most of these students are keen on enhancing knowledge and awareness of students about proper attire, and extending beneficial, healthy, enriching and encouraging facilities for promoting appropriate appearance.
