Histological changes of oviduct of adult Ostriches during reproductive and non reproductive

Ostrich are classified in Ratites class of birds. In this bird left oviduct grows only. Female ostrich has a reproductive period and non-reproductive or no egg producing period. Ostrich reproductive period from early April until early October and non-reproductive period from late October to late March in Iran. Oviduct ostriches from five regions Infundibulum, Magnum, Isthmus, Uterus or Shell glands and Vagina are made. This study was conducted on four adult female birds in reproductive period and four adult female birds in non reproductive period. Section of five microns thickness obtained from tissues stained through Hematoxylin and Eosin technique. Study of tissue sections revealed significant changes in the wall of oviduct in reproductive and non reproductive period, so that non- reproductive period adult ostrich, mucosal epithelial tissue than short simple columnar shape and less pseudo stratified columnar shape in all five regions are seen. Density of cilia in the columnar cells apex in non- reproductive period has much less than reproductive period. Density of lamina propria tubular glands in non- reproductive period has less than reproductive period and lamina propria consist of the loose connective tissue with irregular tubular glands. Thickness of muscular layer containing inner circularly and outer longitudinally directions gradually increased from infundibulum region to vagina, Vaginal muscle had the highest thickness. Serous layer covered outer longitudinally direction muscular layer, converting to adventitia at the end of vagina region.
