Determination of Volume and Value Loss in Logging Operations (Case study: Chafroud Forests of Gilan)

To determine the amount of volume and value loss during logging operation (felling and bucking, skidding and loading) three compartments in district 2 of Chafroud Watershed in Gilan province was selected in this study and in each compartment, thirsty trees were selected by random sampling method. On the other hand, more than ninety percent of the marked trees were Beech (Fagus orientalis L.). On this basis; all selected trees were Beech, with diameter range of 65-85 centimeter at the breast height. The results showed that the highest amount of volume and value loss was in felling and bucking, and the least amount of volume and value loss was in skidding. The wood waste in different stages of logging operation in current method was calculated 13.9% (9.9% in felling and bucking operation, 1.2% in skidding operation and 2.8% in loading operation), additionally waste costs associated with loss were calculated 2634 Rials per cubic meter.
