Beginning of Nature in Craigʹʹs Ideas through Introduction and Study of One of His a Priori Arguments

ويليام لين كريگ (William Lane Craig)، فيلسوف و متاله شهير امريكايي، به‌عنوان احيا‌كننده نوع خاصي از براهين كيهان‌شناختي شهرت يافته؛ او اين برهان را «برهان كيهان‌شناسي كلامي» (kalam cosmological argument) ناميده است. ركن اساسي اين برهان، آغازمندي يا حدوث زماني جهان است. كريگ به‌منظور اثبات اين مقدمه اساسيِ برهان خود، به چهار دليل متوسل شده كه دو‌تاي آن‌ها پيشيني (فلسفي) و دو‌تاي ديگر پسيني (علمي) هستند. در اين مقاله، پس از طرح تصوير مورد نظر كريگ از آغاز جهان، يكي از استدلال‌‌هاي پيشيني و يكي از تاييدات تجربي او به‌نفع آغازمندي طبيعت طرح شده و مورد ارزيابي قرار گرفته است. درنهايت چنين نتيجه‌‌گيري شده است كه، به‌رغم آن‌كه تصوير كريگ از آغاز عالم تصويري منسجم و سازگار است، دلايل او توانايي اثبات تحقق خارجيِ آن را ندارد.

The well-known American philosopher and theologian, William Lane Craig has been known as the reviver of a particular cosmological argument which he calls "Kalam cosmological argument". The main part of this argument is that the universe has some temporal beginning (temporal origination). To prove this important premise of his argument, Craig appeals to four reasons two of which are a priori (philosophical) and two others are a posteriori (scientific). In the present article, after depicting the beginning of the universe as Craig thinks, one of his a priori arguments for this claim is introduced and assessed. Finally, the article comes to the conclusion that, though Craigʹs picture of the beginning of the universe is consistent and coherent, it is not able to prove that such a picture may be realized in the external world.
