Persian Garden in Pope’s Perception: A Detailed Description of “Gardens” Article in the Book: “A Survey of Persian Art: From Prehistoric Times to the Present”

«آرتر آپم پوپ » و همسرش «فيليس آكرمن » از محققان و هنرشناسان نامي معاصر بوده كه در خصوص هنر ايران آثار متعددي تاليف و منتشر كرده اند. معروفترين و مهم ترين اين آثار مجموعه دانشنامه 16 جلدي با عنوان «سيري در هنر ايران(از دوران پيش از تاريخ تا امروز) » است كه در سال 1977 م. به زبان انگليسي منتشر شد. از آن زمان به عنوان يكي از منابع پايه در مطالعات تاريخ معماري ايران مورد استفاده محققين قرار گرفته است. بخش عمده اي از مجموعه فوق در 1387 ش. توسط گروهي از مترجمان به سرپرستي نجف دريابندري ترجمه و توسط انتشارات علمي و فرهنگي منتشر شده است. در آخرين بخش جلد سوم از مجموعه فوق، مقال هاي تحت عنوان «باغها » تاليف گرديده كه مولفان در آن به وجوه مختلف موضوع باغ در ايران پرداخته اند. با توجه به سابقه محققين و ارزش كتاب تاليفي اطلاع از كم و كيف محتواي اين مقاله و نكات مورد توجه در آن براي علاقمندان به موضوع باغ ايراني به ويژه دانشجويان ارزشمند است. از آنجا كه ممكن است مقاله فوق در دسترس همگان قرار نداشته باشد و با توجه به اينكه متن تاليف و ترجمه شده جداي از تصاوير و فاقد عنوان هاي فرعي است، ممكن است مطالعه و درك محتواي آن توسط خوانندگان دشوار باشد؛ از اين رو مقاله پيش رو جهت جلب توجه مجدد به محتواي مقاله «باغها » و نيز طبقه بندي مطالب مندرج در آن تهيه گرديد. در مقاله «باغها » نويسندگان به موضوعاتي چون تاريخچه باغ ايراني، اهميت، منظور و هدف از ساخت باغ در ايران و نقش آن در زندگي ايرانيان، طرح و مشخصات با غ هاي ايراني، معرفي منابع مختلف جهت شناخت باغ ايراني، عناصر و اجزا باغ ايراني و مشخصات آنها از جمله: آب نماها، درختان، بوته ها و گل ها، تزيينات، حيوانات و ... پرداخته اند.

Arthur Upham Pope and his wife Phyllis Ackerman are both among the most wellknown recent researchers who have published various books and articles about Persian art and architecture. One of their most famous and significant works is their 16 volume encyclopedia titled “A Survey of Persian Art: From Prehistoric Times to the Present” and published in 1977. This book has been used by researchers around the world as one of the basic references for studying history of Persian art and architecture. The book has been translated into Farsi in 2008. The last part of the third volume of the book contains an article named “Gardens” in which the authors have considered various aspects of historical gardens of Iran in a rather compact text. The text does not have any detailed sub-headings and includes just two drawings, so the reader should refer to other volumes to view the pictures and plates. Since the authors have a broad research background on the history of Persian art and architecture, it is worth having a more detailed look at the article here which could be useful for those researchers and scholars in the field who may not be familiar with the article or may not have access to it. The article discusses several related issues on Persian gardens such as their history, aim and such objectives of creation as their space, their critical role in people’s life in the region, their properties, design layout and their elements such as ponds, water canals, trees, flowers, animals and decorations.
