Considering Historical and Philosophical Evidences of Michael Polanyi’s Influence on Thomas Kuhn

كتاب ساختار انقلاب‌هاي علمي كوهن را معمولاً نقطه عطفي در فلسفه علم به‌شمار مي‌آورند. با اين حال، به جز كوهن، فلاسفه ديگري نيز در روشن‌تر‌شدن نقاط ضعف فلسفه‌هاي تجربه‌گرايانه موثر بوده‌اند و درصدد ارايه راهكارهايي بديل نيز برآمده‌اند. مايكل پولاني از همين فلاسفه‌اي است كه اندكي پيش از انتشار كتاب ساختار در مكتوبات فلسفي‌اش، به‌ويژه در كتاب معرفت شخصي، ايده‌هايي بسيار شبيه به ايده‌هاي كوهن در ساختار را مطرح كرد. اين شباهت چنان زياد است كه بعضي كوهن را متهم به سرقت از آراي پولاني كرده‌اند. بنابراين مي‌توان، با بررسي شواهد تاريخي حاكي از اين تاثير، بررسي متن اصلي كتاب‌هاي آن دو، و نيز توصيفاتي كه ديگران درباره نسبت بين آن‌ها بيان كرده‌اند، به روشن‌ترشدن اين موضوع كمك فراواني كرد. افزون بر اين، مي‌توان با بعضي از انديشه‌هاي پولاني كه جهان‌بيني بسيار متفاوتي با كوهن دارد نيز آشنا شد.

Usually The Structure of Scientific Revolution is known as a turning point in the philosophy of science. However, rather than Kuhn, there have been other philosophers who have tried to shed light on infirmity points of empirical philosophies, some of them have even tried to suggest alternative solutions. Michael Polanyi is one of these latter philosophers who, just before the publication of The Structure, has brought ideas so similar to those of Kuhnʹs, in his philosophical works especially in his Personal Knowledge. These similarities are so much that Kuhn has even been accused to plagiarism on Polanyiʹs opinions. In this paper, we are going to take this case into consideration by studying certain historical evidences which imply such an influence; comparing the original texts of their books; and finally, bringing what others have said in this regard. On the other hand, such a consideration can provide us an opportunity to know Polanyi better, especially his metaphysics which is radically different from Kuhn’s.
