The Foundations and Consequences of Suhrawardi’s Theory of Imagination

مساله خيال نزد دانشمندان مسلمان از ثمرات معرفتي در مسايل متنوعي چون هستي‌شناسي، وحي و نبوت، مفهوم‌سازي و كاركردهاي هنر برخوردار است و در نظام فلسفي شيخ اشراق نيز در رابطه‌اي تلازمي با ساير مسايل ايفاي نقش مي‌كند. شاخص‌ترين مباني سهروردي در پردازش نظريه خيال قاعده ابصار است كه شيخ اشراق آن را در مواضع متعدد بسط داده و براساس آن خيال را به مثابه اشراق نفس تبيين كرده است. صرف نظر از دليل شهودي، استدلال عمده شيخ بر خيال اشراقي، ابطال قواي متعدد ادراكي است كه براساس آن مرتبه‌اي در عالم وجود را به مُثُل معلّقه اختصاص مي‌دهد. وي در مساله ادراك حسي و خيالي سنخيت را منتفي مي‌داند.

The problem of “imagination”, as raised by Muslim philosophers, has several epistemic consequences in subjects as diverse as ontology, prophecy, conceptualization and the functions of art. In Illuminationist Philosophy of Suhrawardi, moreover, bears the topic of imagination a correlation to other subjects. Of the foundations of Suhrawardiʹs processing of the theory of imagination, the most prominent is the principle of vision, which he has developed in some positions, and based on which he has considered imagination as the illumination of the soul. Apart from intuitive proofs, Suhrawardiʹs major argument for illumationist imagination is the refutation of manifold cognitive faculties. It is based on this refutation that he devotes an echelon of the universe to suspended archetypes (incorporeal forms). He rejects the affinity between sensual and imaginative perception.
