مثنوي مصيبت‌نامه در چهل مقاله و در ساختاري منسجم و سامانمند ديدگاه‌ها و تجارب عرفاني عطار را به وضوح نمايان مي‌سازد. اصالت مصيبت نامه عطار به سبب تجارب جديد و پويايي است كه عطار به واسطه آن، هم حركت صعودي و تدريجي مراحل سلوك را بيان كرده و هم رشته و پيوند ديالكتيكي اين مراحل را بازگو نموده است. آن چه در كلّ ساختار اين مثنوي اهميت دارد، تركيب جريان‌هاي فكري متعدد در انديشه عطار و تاويل ادراكات عرفاني او از اين جريان‌هاست.عطار خط سير اين انديشه‌ها را در عرفان و ادب فارسي كه مباني آن پيش تر توسط سنايي پي ريزي شده بود، بر مبناي سفرهاي روحاني در عالم جان تبيين مي‌كند.ما در توصيفي كه در باره طرح كلّي و تاويل ادراكات عرفاني عطار در اين منظومه به دست مي‌دهيم، نشان داده ايم كه شيوه تاويل او در اين منظومه به او امكان مي دهد كه در حين تركيب منسجم و سامانمند عناصر ديني و عرفاني و فلسفي، متوجه مفاهيم باطني و تسلسل و توالي منطقي آن ها نيز هست.

Mathnavi of Musibat-Nama in forty episodes and in a coherent and organized structure exposes clearly Attarʹs mystical views and experiences. The genuineness of Attarʹs Musibat-Nama is due to new dynamic experiences through which Attar has explained both the gradual and ascending movement of spiritual pilgrimages of man (solouk) and also the dialectical links between different phases of these spiritual pilgrimages. What is important in the overall structure of this mathnavi is the combination of multiple streams of thought and interpretation of Attarʹs mystical perceptions. Attar presents these thoughts, the principles of which had already been introduced by Sanai, in Persian literature and mysticism through spiritual journeys in the world of soul. In this paper, the outline and interpretation of Attarʹs mystical perceptions in this mathnavi are described. It is shown that his interpretation in this mathnavi has allowed him to, alongside with the coherent and organized combination of religious, mystical, and philosophical elements, consider the occult concepts and their logical sequence.
