Interpretation of the Qur’an through Qur’an in Al-Tafsir al-Kabir

Most of the interpreters have taken into consideration the attesting to another aya by verbal preference in the interpretation of that aya in their books, and some of them have relied on context, instead; and all of these are called the interpretation of the Qur’an through Qur’an. Razi is among the interpreters who have made much use of this type of interpretation in his exegetical book named Mafatih al-Ghayb. This article has addressed this type of interpretation undertaken by Razi; and from among various topical interpretations, it has chosen and challenged the topic of ihbat (cancellation). So, on one hand, it has pointed out the ayas concerning this topic and touched upon the studies and sayings of various Islamic sects and, on the other hand, has referred to examples of the ayas used for explaining and identifying their intention of other ayas. In the end, it is concluded that Razi has not been restricted to a specific exegetical opinion – which he has been restricted to in all instances of repeating the topic – just as he has renounced the traditions narrated on this topic for the sake of defending his own opinion.
