بسياري از بيماران در روند اقدامات پزشكي مداخله نمي‌كنند‌؛ دليل اين رفتار ذهنيّت اشتباهي است كه مردم از تابعيت صرف بيمار از پزشك دارند؛ با علم به حق انتخاب ترجيح مي‌دهند از نظر پزشك به عنوان يك عالم مطلق تبعيت نمايند و تعداد بسيار زيادي از بيماران هم از حق تصميم‌گيري خود بي‌اطلاع هستند. از نگاه اين تحقيق در مرحله تشخيص بيماري، تصميم درخصوص انجام مقدمات‌ اعم از آزمايشات و معاينات مختلف را بايد حق بيمار دانست و در مرحله درمان هم حاكميت اراده بيمار به عنوان يكي از طرفين رابطه قراردادي لازم به‌نظر مي‌رسد. بيمار برمبناي كرامت انساني كه ذاتي اوست داراي حقوقي غير‌قابل سلب مي‌باشد كه حق تعيين سرنوشت از جمله اين حقوق است و از آنجا كه به عنوان يك انسان مسلط بر نفس خويش است دخالت پزشك براي درمان نياز به اذن او دارد و اذن بيمار همان اعلام رضايت يا اخذ نظر او در تصميم‌گيري‌هاي پزشكي مي‌باشد.
