Farabi’s Views on Virtue

تبيين مسيله فضيلت از ديدگاه فارابي و اهميت آن مي تواند راهگشاي فهم و درك برخي از مباحث كليدي فلسفه وي مانند جامعه مدني، مدينه فاضله، امت فاضل، اجتماع فاضل، معموره الفاضله(جهان برين وآباد) باشد. ديدگاه فارابي در بررسي و پژوهش پيرامون فضيلت متاثر از نگاه سعادتگرانه وي در باب اخلاق و كمال‌يابي انسان است. او بر‌اين باور است كه آدمي‌‌به طور فطري موجودي كمال‌جو و سعادت‌طلب است و براي نيل به‌اين هدف والا و مقدس نيازمند ابزار و وسايل است، كسب انواع فضايل (نظري، فكري، اخلاقي و عملي)، همان ابزار و وسايل نيل انسان به كمال و سعادت است و دست يازيدن به فضايل ياد شده بر تعليم و تربيت افراد جامعه مبتني است، از‌اين روي فارابي هدف تعليم را اكتساب فضايل نظري و هدف تربيت را نيز محقق ساختن فضايل اخلاقي(ويا نفساني) مي داند. تلاش نويسنده، در‌اين مقاله متكي بر فهم و درك وي از متون و آثار فارابي بوده و از‌اين نظر به متون وآثار ديگران ، كمتر ارجاع داده شده است.

The explanation of virtue and its significance from Farabi’s point of view can pave the way to a better understanding of the key issues of his philosophy like civil society, utopia, practical wisdom, scholar community and habitus. Farabi’s views on virtue are influenced by his felicity-oriented perspective toward ethics and perfectionism of mankind. He believes that human beings are perfectionist and felicitous in nature and to achieve this sublime and sacred goal specific means are required. Acquiring various virtues (theoretical, intellectual, ethical and practical) is the means through which human beings can accomplish the perfection of virtues and their practice which is only achievable through education provided for the members of the society. Therefore, Farabi sets the aim of education as the acquisition of theoretical and moral virtues. As the present paper aims at an understanding of Farabi’s works very few references are made to the works of other scholars.
